To promote collaboration on some of the biggest challenges facing agriculture today, the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is partnering with the University of Padova in Italy for a groundbreaking dual master’s degree program in sustainable agriculture.

Steensland, deputy director of the Global Harvest Initiative, told students and faculty that successful solutions for feeding the world's hungry have to be created in concert with the farmers and community members on the ground in developing countries and in our own backyard. From rice fields in western Africa to sheep pastures in Uruguay, students in the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental sciences travel the world each year to learn how to build a more food-secure future. CAES faculty, students and administrators gathered Tuesday to celebrate the college’s international mission and accomplishments at the sixth annual International Agriculture Day reception.

Scotland Service Learning Study Abroad 04/06/16 Merritt Melancon
Dumfries, Scotland, is about 4,000 miles away from the University of Georgia’s Athens Campus, but the population there faces the same problems as many Georgia towns, including food insecurity and health concerns connected to nutrition. As Georgians, we hear about these problems often, but it’s sometimes hard to put them into perspective. Over spring break last month, a group of 10 College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences students traveled to Dumfries as part of the college’s “Scotland: Food Insecurity Service-Learning Project,” to lend a hand and to put the problems facing their own communities into perspective.

The Office of Global Programs has again awarded grants through its Faculty International Travel Funding Program that will allow 11 University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences faculty members to meet colleagues in eight countries during the next several months.

UGA poultry science developed the Chkminvent app, a poultry house moisture removal and ventilation calculator intended to provide users with an estimated minimum ventilation rate required to remove the specified daily amount of moisture from a poultry house. CAES News

In the middle of this season of feasting and fêtes, it can sometimes be easy to forget about the plight of people who struggle to have enough to eat. For two University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences students who had the chance to attend the 2015 World Food Prize Borlaug Dialogue this fall, that won’t be the case this year.
