Trial Gardens Open House

2022 Trial Gardens Plant Sale
Whether on the hunt for Sinningia speciosa or simply looking for a leafy perennial in the perfect shade of green, the annual plant sale hosted by the Trial Gardens at the University of Georgia will have plenty of options for experts and hobbyists alike. The sale will run in person from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 9, at 1030 West Green Street in Athens.

National Academy of Inventors
University of Georgia professors Scott NeSmith, Anumantha Kanthasamy and S. Edward Law have been elected Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors. Including these three new fellows, 12 UGA faculty have received this honor, all of them since 2013.

Seedless Citrus
Wayne Hanna, a legend in the plant breeding world, specifically with turfgrass, retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2002. He immediately joined the faculty at the University of Georgia’s Tifton campus. When he arrived, he asked the assistant dean if he could work on developing a cold-tolerant citrus tree that produced seedless fruit. “Go ahead” was the answer.

New Bacteria Species
University of Georgia researchers have identified a new species of bacteria, which they have named Pseudomonas alliivorans — from “allium vorans,” which translates as onion devourer or eater.

2021 Classic City Awards
The Trial Gardens at the University of Georgia have announced the 2021 Classic City Award winners from the hundreds of varieties tested over the long, hot summer. The Trial Gardens are known as the “go-to research trial garden to test plants for the combination of heat and humidity,” said John Ruter, director of the Trial Gardens and 2021 UGA Inventor of the Year.
